My Instagram Method & Tips

IMG_5043

IG to me is just an extension of what my blog has to offer, it’s where I do most of my communication with my viewers and I could spend hours on it! I try to keep my feed clean and consistent with what’s on my site but it’s also a place I can share news, post updates and really push my creativity.

  • Similar Tones & Sizes – I feel that if you have an over-all color palette to your feed it makes it that much more appealing to the eye. Just like it’s said if a blog is too busy people will click away, same goes for your IG. I suffer from synesthesia and I do find that it helps me when it comes to colors meshing well. I’ll scroll through my feed and if an old picture isn’t saturated enough I’ll remove it. I know its stupid (I’ll use the word stupid so that I’m not insensitive towards others feelings) but it will annoy the hell out of me and again I’m very anal about shit like that. If you use an app (like me) to make sure the entire picture fits in the screen do it for all of your photos to keep it all proportioned.
  • Separate Business from Personal – When I first started my IG it was a bit of both because I wasn’t really serious about blogging but now that I’m trying to take LWSS to the next level I feel that my personal life should be its own thing. I know some people have separate accounts for friends and family but thats all too much for me, I really don’t care who sees my page nor am I trying to hide the fact that I blog. I’ll occasionally post something about my children every now and again but I try to keep them off social media as much as I can for now. Maybe in the future I’ll feature them in vlogs or something but I don’t feel it necessary to do so at this very moment. IG is a place to share my work not my #MCM! (no offense)
  • Consistency – I feel that if you have a certain style or background in which you take your photos it can now be a way to recognized where the photo originated. New ways to create content is great but you also want to leave a trail so that you are known for your work.
  • Tagging – If you take a picture of a flatlay make sure you tag all the brands that are in the picture, your picture might catch the eye of a particular brand and get re-posted! I can’t describe the feeling every time someone or a brand  shares my work, it’s flattering and humbling.

There is no right or wrong way to do things, it’s all a matter of what you want to achieve with your account. For some bloggers it’s how they get traffic to their site or simply letting viewers know a post has gone live. These are all things I take into consideration while uploading to IG because it’s a reflection of who and what I represent. Having an abundance of followers is nice and all but the interaction is what matters most to me at least, I could only speak for myself.

I love this post, Some celebrities really need to take tips like this onboard. It annoys me when popular people have really messy instagram pages! That being said I absolutely adore yours, every picture is perfection.

These are some really great tips, I agree with similar tones and shapes, if someone’s Instagram is ‘messy’ I’m more likely not to follow them. x

I love your photos! So profesh! I only have a personal IG account and definitely cannot be bothered to make my pics look a particular haha. But I know what you mean when I look through well developed beauty bloggers, their pics are so pretty too!

These are fantastic tips, I really should make more of an effort to tag my photos. To me, it makes it look a little messy, but it sounds like it’s worth it!

i think tags are messy too, lol. but, i’ve been trying, sort of. Good luck if you do try to tag yours more!

Thanks for the tips! I think it is really important to tag the brands that are in your photos! And YES it is so flattering when a brand is re-posted! 🙂

Great tips. I agree with you that consistency is key! As for tagging, I also get really excited when some of my fave brands regram my posts. When Stila cosmetics regramed a pic of mine, I almost swallowed my tongue and when Aimee Song and Phillip Lim commented on one of my pics, I almost died. IG is such a fun and supportive community and that’s how I came across you!!!

Definitely a great list of tips – I think that the similar tones&sizes is extremely important although difficult to always accomplish. And separating persona and business as well. For me, it hasn’t been so much of a conscious decision to not post personal pictures – my blog is a lifestyle blog – but the quality of the photos need to be there and most often, when I am spontaneously having fun with friends, partying, or eating out, I am not running around with my good camera framing every moment of it – although maybe I should do this at least sometimes. Thinking of starting a personal account to just record my life for me without worrying about composition and light.

Thanks for all the great tips.

Hey Tamira, your tips are great and your IG account looks awesome, just pressed follow :). But I think I’m not the only one who wants to know maybe some more details. Like, what do you use to take your photos? is it your phone or your camera? what special apps do you use for your photos? Thank you so much for your insights!

  • Nik

I’ve been trying really hard with the colour palette. I completely agree with the effect of having a consistent theme!

These are all great tips, specially since I hadn’t thought about some of these aspects.

I don’t share my daughter on my blog and other public social media accounts. i did once but her face was kinda blur. lol. I just don’t like the idea that strangers will come to me IRL and will say hi to my daughter. it’s creepy! anyway, nice tips! I really dig your style and the consistency! Keep it up!

I totally agree with all of your points, but especially the first on haha! I thought I was the only person that anal. It’s good to know there’s someone out there who thinks about these kind of things as seriously as I do 😉 xx

I love instagram, but I’m so fussy about what I post because I want my IG to look good haha, although I don’t feel it’s very appealing to anyone at the moment sadly 🙁 x

What app do you use for your instagram pictures and what’s the filter if you use any?

  • Cori Scherer

Couldn’t agree more. I’m trying to focus my IG more on my blog, but I also love sharing pictures of my favorite foods or things I’m doing, since it is a place to share creativity. What are your tips for taking photos, editing, etc?
