3 Reasons Why I Prefer A Lighter Base

I can’t remember the last time I reached for a foundation, I have nothing against them but this year has been an eye opener for me. I’ve found that with a good concealer I can go in and cover up “imperfections” without having to pile on loads of foundation in areas I don’t need to. In this heavily saturated contour world we live in it’s hard not to get sucked in I know, but there is nothing wrong with enhancing natural beauty. People stereotype and think that that particular style is the only way to wear makeup, it just isn’t realistic for the everyday girl.

  1. Your Skin Looks Like Skin – I’ve noticed a tremendous difference with how foundation lays on the skin vs. tinted moisturizers. There is less settling in fine lines, pores and it truly looks like your skin but better. TM’s even you out and if you have spots or pigmentation you can do some pin point concealing.
  2. 5 Min Routine – Fingers are the best tools for working in lighter bases. Not only does the warmth of your finger tips help emulsify the base but it can be done in just a few minutes. With thicker fuller foundations you have to sit there and really work it in with a sponge or brush making sure it isn’t cakey at all which I (a mommy of 2) have no time for.
  3. Overall Consistency & Texture – I hate when it feels like I have something heavy on my face. TM or CC creams almost feels like it’s a part of my skin care routine. I don’t have to worry about my base rubbing off on my clothes or someone else’s, I can’t stand when that happens! I want my skin to have a healthy sheen and heavy liquids/powders don’t allow me to achieve that type of finish. Foundations now feel like masks to me and I’ve said in the past, less is more…

I need to try the Chanel CC Cream. I hadn’t even realized they had one.

I completely agree! I have never been one for heavy bases and for a night out look I just tend to spot-conceal the areas that do need a little more coverage. Something about the look of detectable foundation on my skin bothers me, but for others I think it looks nice, which is odd. x

I’m 100% with you. I am older (over 40) and tinted moisturiser or cc cream looks soooooooo much better than foundation. I love Laura Mercier Oil Free, Nars Radiant Creamy and Chanel CC. I don’t believe Burberry makes anything in my colour, NC40 in winter and 42 in summer. The only foundations that I still like are Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua (delicious, and I just use a thin dusting of Les Beiges for long lasting glowy goodness) and Diorskin Nude Air….I use very little of the latter and I only use it at night.
I recently got Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk and while it makes for stunning pictures, each time I see my face in the mirror I think FOUNDATION!!!
Certainly it’s a huge pity when young girls disguise their glowing skin in layers and layers of full coverage foundation. Granny over and out.

I love lighter base as well but I also hope for medium coverage so I’m on the edge! The NARS Tinted Moisturiser looks so great, everyone’s been talking about it! So sad I haven’t tried it yet x

I can’t deal with a heavy base anymore. It is so uncomfortable compared to a lovely light bb cream or tinted moisturiser.

I bought the Burberry Fresh Glow BB cream upon your recommendation and haven’t looked back since. Can’t imagine putting on a foundation right now!

You are so right! I hate the feeling of having something on my skin. I just want to scratch my face if my base is too heavy. Skin should look like skin and I’m still on the hunt for my perfect base. I want something light and natural with a nice glow, that evens everything out. Do you have a favorite tinted moisturizer?

  • SamanthaSeries

I agree. I very rarely wear foundation by itself, especially since my skin is quite dry. I have the L’Oréal Pro Matte foundation but I actually mix it with my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and it’s perfect together 🙂

I’ve been staying away from foundations for as long as I can remember. I like NARS for nights out or special occasions and I used Laura Mercier for other adventures. But on most days I don’t wear makeup at all. The issue I have is tinted moisturizers never match my skin tone perfectly. I’ve been mixing my NARS with Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer or just concealing with NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. Great post and I love your blog! 😘

I so much prefer a lighter base now and tend to avoid foundations in general, tinted moisturisers are my go to and am on the hunt for a new one! Laura Mercier is an old favourite that I will love forever along with NARS but like the look of Burberry and Jouer next!
